Acts 18:24 – 23:35
Over the past couple of weeks, we have read of Paul’s perseverance for the sake of the gospel despite what seems like a never-ending series of trials. In this week’s section of reading, the danger continues to increase for Paul as he insists on returning to Jerusalem despite the many warnings that his life would be in danger. Although Luke doesn’t make it clear why Paul could not be dissuaded, based on Paul’s letters, scholars believe Paul was taking an offering to the Jerusalem believers (Rom. 15:25-27, 1 Cor. 16:1-4). “Paul wanted to make this presentation of money in order to fortify one of his basic doctrines, the unity of Jew and Gentile in Christ (Eph 2:11-22).”1
For Paul, his desire to see unity between the Jews and Gentiles in worship of God overcame his fear or concern for his own life. He wanted to be faithful to the Lord more than he wanted comfort or security. He was compelled by the love of Christ (2 Cor. 5:14-15).
Below are three short videos of North Way missionaries recounting some of the ways they have been compelled by the love of Christ. Take some time to listen to their stories and consider how Christ’s love might compel you to serve others over yourself.
