North Way Family,
This weekend our calendar marks Juneteenth and Father’s Day. I love the connection between our Heavenly Father and His heart for freedom.
June 19th, is the celebration of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. If you are unfamiliar with this date, it commemorates events from 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas first learned about their freedom from slavery more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was introduced, and Juneteenth just became a federal holiday.
As followers of Jesus, we are called to pursue healing and unity in our land. Juneteenth serves as an important reminder that we must remember to persevere and persist in the fight to end all forms of captivity … from sin, from exploitation, and from all forms of evil. May we as a church pray and live out the call of Micah 6:8, everywhere we live, work and play.
Sunday, June 20th is Father’s Day. On this day, we celebrate, give thanks for, and honor fathers. Dad’s … thank you for your love, voice and example in our lives! May this day be a day of rest and honor for you.
And yet not everyone feels like they can celebrate Father’s Day. Some grieve at the loss of a father or the experience they had with their father. Psalm 68 describes God as powerful, loving and strong, and specifically verse 5 tells us that God is the father to the fatherless and protector of widows. If this is a difficult weekend for you, I pray that you may experience the love of God the father like never before. In fact, may we all experience this. Nothing refreshes our soul like the love of our Heavenly father!
I hope to see you this weekend at a North Way location, as we worship God our loving Father who sets captives free indeed.
