Everyone wants to make a difference in their life. Since 2006, more than 500 people from North Way Christian Community have made a huge difference by mentoring children throughout the Pittsburgh area. LAMP stands for a Learning and Mentoring Partnership between North Way and welcoming schools, utilizing Family Guidance, Inc. for training and mentoring supervision. The concept is simple but powerful. LAMP mentors commit to spending time with a child once a week for a minimum of one year, similar to national mentoring programs like Big Brothers / Big Sisters. LAMP mentoring matches, though, are faith-based through the Partnership with Family Guidance, a Christ-centered youth mentoring organization.
Mentors have experienced tremendous growth in their faith in God and have enjoyed the opportunity to invest in others through meaningful relationships. Many LAMP mentors have shared that mentoring has been one of the most rewarding things they have ever done. Mentors enjoy the opportunity to live out their faith in Christ in practical ways by sharing their lives with a young person, and children in LAMP have enjoyed having an adult in their lives that they can truly look up to… someone who will be there for them no matter what. Very often mentor/mentee relationships turn into lifelong friendships.
Is God calling you to become a mentor? The need for more mentors is constant.
Yes, we want to equip mentors with the tools they need to be successful. These tools include essential training in the fundamentals of mentoring and cultural proficiency. Training is provided through our partnership with Family Guidance, the most successful and experienced faith-based mentoring organization in Pittsburgh.
Volunteers can choose between Community-Based Mentoring or School-Based Mentoring.
Community-Based mentors spend time with their mentee doing fun activities like visiting museums, taking in a ballgame, catching a movie, etc. School-Based mentors spend time with their mentees at their school doing fun activities like board games, puzzles, artwork, etc, during their mentee’s lunch/recess time. This can be a great fit for mentors who need a more structured, daytime mentoring schedule. Both types of mentoring meet with their mentee once a week for an initial commitment of one year.
YES! LAMP mentors have witnessed their mentees achieve improved academic performance, reduced number of school absences and disciplinary incidents, graduate high school, and numerous LAMP mentees have graduated college. Most rewarding is that LAMP mentees have reported that by being in the program, they have experienced significant growth in their relationship with God!
Family Guidance is a comprehensive, Christ-centered organization, established in 1964, that provides training, support, and mentoring supervision for LAMP mentors. They are an accredited member of the Christian Association of Youth Mentoring and their mentoring programs are aimed at helping vulnerable children, one at a time, giving them hope and a future through the love and grace of Jesus Christ.
